The Expanse: Extra Season Agreed For 2018 – What To Expect?
The Expanse has been labeled one of the most relevant science fiction television series’ in recent history and the crew have been rewarded for their efforts with another season.
Currently nearing the end of its second season, The Expanse is set a few hundred years in the future where Mars has become an independent colony and has a patchy political relationship with Earth. Humans living in the outer belt, or belters, are also a big political force to be reckoned with and are fed up with being treated as third rate citizens by the governments of Mars and Earth.
Aboard the Rocinante, a commandeered Martian military vessel, a mixed group of Martians, Belters and Earthers are caught in the middle of a bigger political game as they find themselves being forced to take sides in a brewing political battle. What’s more, they end up following a discovery that threatens to destabilize the very nature of humanity.
The response has been very good from critics and viewers who stated the cast, effects and storyline as being relevant and successful. The characters have been complex and intriguing whilst the visuals have also been fairly pleasing on the eye. The show was inspired by a series of books written by James S. A. Corey, the pen name for a collaboration between Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. There are further books in the series, and so plenty more material to work with.
“The Expanse is a gorgeous, thrilling, emotional series that has quite simply raised the bar for science fiction on television. We, along with the fans, are looking forward to continuing the journey with our partners at Alcon Television Group and the series’ brilliant cast and crew.” ,” said Chris McCumber, President, Entertainment Networks for NBC Universal Cable Entertainment.
Season 3 of The Expanse is likely to start in 2018, and should feature material from the third and fourth books. The storyline has kept fairly close to the books, with just a few exceptions to keep the viewer’s guessing.
What can we expect? (Spoiler Alert!)
The Expanse Wiki states that the third book follows the following storyline:
For generations, the Sol system – Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt – was humanity’s great frontier. Until now. The alien artifact working through its program under the clouds of Venus has appeared beyond Uranus‘s orbit, where it has built a massive gate that leads to a starless space beyond.
Jim Holden and the crew of the Rocinante are part of a vast flotilla of scientific and military ships going out to examine the artifact. But behind the scenes, a complex plot is unfolding, with the destruction of Holden at its core. As the emissaries of the human race try to find whether the gate is an opportunity or a threat, the greatest danger is the one they brought with them.
Many fans have described The Expanse as being politically relevant, given the current political climate in the world today. The characters in the show often face persecution because of their backgrounds, but must work together to overcome a common and unexpected enemy. 200 years in the future and humanity has become diversified as humans adapt to living in different parts of the galaxy with different gravity strengths.
