The makers of Star Wars Episode 9 are set to pay homage to the late Carrie Fisher by bringing back Princess Leia one last time.

The world lost a true icon when Carrie Fisher sadly passed away last year, and the Star Wars family felt the blow the hardest as they lost one of their own. Fisher played a big part in 2015’s The Force Awakens, as General Leia, and shortly after her death it was revealed that a big part of her filming for Star Wars Episode 9 had already been completed. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set for release later this year but many were wondering if they would pay tribute in Episode IX, set to be directed by Colin Trevorrow.

Fans will be extremely grateful that Disney-Lucasfilm have decided against using CGI created footage to bring Fisher back. Although CGI can create great likeness to real-life figures, it couldn’t ever do justice to the importance of Fisher’s legacy in the Star Wars universe. The family of the late star have revealed that they have talked with the producers about how they plan to do it.

“Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa.”

Todd Fisher and Billie Lourd spoke to the The New York Daily News and revealed they will reuse old footage to create one last appearance for Carrie Fisher as the legendary Princess Leia. The footage will come from scenes in The Last Jedi and The Force Awakens.

“Both of us were like, ‘Yes, how do you take her out of it?’” Todd Fisher said. “And the answer is, you don’t. She’s as much a part of it as anything and I think her presence now is even more powerful than it was, like Obi Wan – when the saber cuts him down he becomes more powerful. I feel like that’s what’s happened with Carrie. I think the legacy should continue… To me, Star Wars is the holy grail of storytelling and lore and you can’t mess with it.”

Details are pretty thin on the ground about the plot and theme of Star Wars Episode 9, but we can already tell that if Leia is involved, it won’t be a spin off in a different direction. It will be very interesting to see how the filmmakers use the footage to create something new for the new movie. It will be, however, a fitting tribute to a much-loved character and person. We can only hope that they do her children and family proud.

What do you think? Glad they aren’t using CGI? Let me know on Facebook!
